Highlights:
Saturday: 90s mixed cd, Mexico, margaritas, Superbad (which was incredibly, side-achingly funny, and also ridiculous dirty).
Sunday: Rain, rain, rain. Went to Greenlake for soup, wrapps, and hot chocolate. Also, The Mighty Boosh. Of course!
The song for Monday is by The Blow - True Affection. The Blow or Khaela Maricich is a local musician, hailing from Portland, Oregon; Queen Anne, Seattle, and lived in Olympia, WA for 10 years. Since 2004, she's performed exclusively as The Blow. This song is from the album Paper Television, 2006.

I know it's Wednesday. If I was smart, I'd backdate this and make it look like I didn't forget, but I don't want to lie to you. I'm not that kind of person.
This song is the closing theme for Clark & Michael. It's by British Sea Power, which is a great band (one of Casey's favorites). New episode posted today! I watched it when I woke up this morning, I'm such a major nerd.
Last night's Tuesday Dinner was amazing, Tamarind Tree is now my favorite restaurant in Seattle. I had the green mango salad, beef stew, and Tamarind Tree rolls. Drew had the lemongrass beef rolls (actually he got something else entirely, something with chicken), and the Tamarind Tree noodles. And Jen got the egg rolls (so good) and pho.
All in all, it was a fabulous Tuesday. And I bought Casey a million packs (actually, five) of HI-CHOOOOOO (Hi-Chew). So, I'd like to go ahead and assume he had a good Tuesday, too.
Today is so fucking hot, I want to curl up and die.
So I have to apologize here from the outset. This music Monday will not bring you anything new, or even good. It is an excuse for me to reminisce, and sing some bad songs in the car, and also, the Spice Girls. Are getting back together! I am more excited about this than I care to admit. I had a secret love for the Spice Girls back when they are popular (Athena and I) and I always loved how trashy and fun and stereotypical they were. The slutty one! The sporty one! And so on. But were any of them the smart one? Somehow I don't think so. Anyway.
Today's Music Monday is my favorite Spice Girls song to sing along to. It is not good. In fact, none of their music is good. I downloaded their discography over the weekend and when re-listening to Wannabe which I have not heard for years and years, it struck me how terrible it was. But, c'est la vie. Part of why they are so great, is that their music is so terrible. Hurrah!
Today (Tuesday) is supposed to be 80 degrees! I almost wore shorts to work but I failed to shave my legs. I'm curious about how acceptable dress-short wearing is here. They are gray velvet shorts, and they hit the knee, but I don't know that I've seen anyone wearing anything shorter than below the knee. However, I am a rebel! Also, I don't do well in hot weather.
I didn't have time to post yesterday, what with being unsatisfied with everything I came up with yesterday and then spending some time getting a little tipsy with my parents in the evening. We went to the Matador in West Seattle, and I ate the carnitas (as usual) - Casey had the carne asada (as usual), my mom a giant plate of nachos, and my dad had the ribeye. Also, margaritas. And Cupcake Royale! It was just like being in Ballard, except there were no crowds, and also, we were in West Seattle.
Quickie weekend recap - Saturday Casey and I ran some errands in U-Village, and ate at Zao. Sara was working; we said hello. We also bought some new wineglasses at Crate and Barrel - it was the big summer sidewalk sale, and we paid 4.95 when usually we would have paid 7.95. Our new wine glasses are very globular and also, very large. We also purchased a shredder at Office Depot, and I spent an hour that evening shredding one of the three bags of old bills and credit card statements I have stashed in the closet. Additionally, I failed to do more than skim Jen's e-mail and thus didn't realize that Gerritt's party had been moved back to Saturday. Come Sunday I raced to the IMA, showered, and was dressed and ready to go before I was informed I was a day late. Sooo. Instead I went to World Wrapps - the one by Greenlake makes the macho-est macho wraps (the one in U-Village serves puny sizes in comparison) and to Chocolati, where I soothed my cramps with Aztec cinnamon almond truffles. All in all it was a pretty quiet weekend, but satisfying.
Music Monday comes to you with two movie related songs! One of the best documentaries I have seen in recent years was music documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston, about the manic-depressive singer-songwriter. It's excellent, I highly recommend it, and a two-disc album of his most well-known works and a compilation album of covers by many delicious bands was released at the same time as the film. My favorite of the covers is the Sparklehorse/The Flaming Lips doing Go. Sidenote: I had the pleasure of seeing Sparklehorse live over Valentine's - Mark Linkous is notorious for being both shy and disliking public performances, as their music is often created with effects that can be produced in a studio. If you have the opportunity to see Sparklehorse (and if you like their music) I suggest that you do so, because it was amazing to see them. I got to stand in the front row, even though I was behind a totally gross PDA couple that made me cranky.
The other song is from the Volver soundtrack, the latest from Pedro Almodovar, and a gorgeous film. The song is lip-synched in the film by Penelope Cruz, and it's pretty obvious that it's not her singing, but it's beautiful, anyway. A lovely, lovely movie, I recommend watching it with your mom.
It's Music Monday! Today's song is something I'm picking right at this moment, so let's see what I can come up with.
Wow, I almost forgot it's Monday already! Music Monday will result in being depressing, as I can't believe a week has passed in that mere slip of time.
The summer slowdown has already begun. I'm ready for another vacation, but it's only 3 weeks since I got back from my last one. So, here's a song.
I went with something slow and folksy for this week, because my life has been slow (or just work, ahem) and the weather's been a little chilly. Definitely calls for cardigans and book-reading, and I think Keren Ann's music fits in nicely with all of that.
You can find her website here. This is from her fifth album (just recently released in the States), the self-titled Keren Ann. Both of the songs below have to do with something being "in your + body part," and I figured it's a theme. Or something.
Also, something that Jen might find interesting: Keren Ann has been around for awhile; her first two solo albums were released in France (and in French) - her last album, Nolita, is sung in French and English, but you might be interested in those (or the others). Since, you know, you're all about the France. Or at least people assume you are :)
First of all, Smitten Kitchen had this to say about Knocked Up: "if you seriously don’t die laughing from the chairs-in-Vegas scene alone, I just don’t know if we can be friends anymore." I completely second that.
Second of all, in case you didn't know, it's Music Monday! That means that I'm going to upload a song for you to enjoy. I'm a huge dork, so I decided I'm going to try to do that every Monday and that I'm going to name this event, and it was early when I was brainstorming so the best I could do was Music Monday. Who knows if that will change; maybe I'll get a flash of creative inspiration later.
Weekend was quiet and uneventful, but pretty productive. Like I said earlier, I cleaned my balcony and got rid of the following items:
- the heaviest bike ever, that I got free under Eric's deck and rode once (it was really heavy)
- 2 bags of dried leaves
- an old butterfly chair frame
- a bunch of metal parts from our old futon
- a bucket
- two dead plants
- a broken bowl that I used to put a spider outside and forgot to bring the bowl back in (for 3 months)
- 2 big spider's webs
- $0.15
I've since replaced the junk with two folding chairs (uncomfortable ones; I wanted to buy new ones but Casey said we should just use the uncomfortable wooden ones we already had), a little plastic table/shelf thingie from Target; a bag of potting soil; our old Christmas tree stand (holiday tree stand); a baby barbeque; and some lighter fluid/charcoal. I also hung up my new barbeque accoutrements that I bought from Fred Meyer. The margaritas I made were delicious and made me tipsy; I also grilled some squash that was amazing. Hurrah for nice weather! For barbequing! And for productive weekends!
I had a tough time picking the song for today. It was a toss-up between a song on Charlotte Gainsbourg's new album 5:55 and this song, from I'm From Barcelona, a pop band from Sweden (with 29 members!!). It is a song I heard constantly when I was staying at Luke's; the lyrics are repetitive (and a little inane) but the song is so joyous and fun, it just makes me smile. Maybe Charlotte Gainsbourg next week - it's a great, retro-y, disco-y song that I've been playing in the car pretty nonstop.
You can read more about the band at their wikipedia article here.
